Would

Ahora, vamos a elaborar sobre el verbo modal: would (Nótese que, los verbos modales, jamás van seguidos por ‘to’ antes del infinitivo, a salvo de ought toneed to  dare to).

Principalmente, usamos would para uso condicional.

  • If one lights a match, it burns.
  • If you boil water, it reaches 100 degrees Celsius.
  • If you are too aggressive, people don’t like it.
  • Because of gravity, if you drop an apple, it falls.

3. Segundo condicional: se usa para situaciones hipotéticas o imaginarias en el presente o el futuro (if + pasado simple + would + infinitivo)
  • If she studied harder, she’d enter medical school with better grades  (‘d = forma de contracción de ‘would’).
  • If you told me earlier I’d be able to come on time.
  • If Jessica didn’t put the heating on, we wouldn’t be so hot.
4. Tercer condicional: se usa para circunstancias absolutamente hipotéticas e imaginarias en el futuro o pasado (if + pasado perfecto + would + have + participio pasado)
  • If you had been born in Austria, you would have spoke German.
  • If only I had lived in the fifteenth century I’d have seen great, historical events.
